Top 5 most popular CMS platforms to choose-Part 1

There are thousands of Content Management Systems (CMS) options available, ranging from free to enterprise-level; each has their own benefits. But unlike many web-developers, who boast the flexibility of the CMS platforms features, offering CMS-based websites built on Wordpress are not our first call of action. We typically first recommend to build a custom-website for the client and then build a custom CMS platform to accommodate it. Most CMS platforms are generally used for websites that need to be updated frequently such as blogs, news sites and

e-commerce stores. However, in many cases, the CMS hosting platform isn’t necessary. The convenience of a CMS is only used to change a few features of the website, leaving the majority of the content unedited.

Although CMS platforms were initially created for easier and faster web-development, they now have many creative limitations compared to custom-code. That’s why we offer a custom-made CMS service. Our custom-made CMS platforms allow for you to experience the benefits of both a fully customised website design and your own CMS platform; accessing design without limitations.

Once you’ve had a look at the different options available to you with D.I.Y CMS customisation features, feel free to get in contact with us to chat about our custom-coded websites or to discuss how we can assist you with setting-up a site on a pre-existing CMS.

Here we’ve explained 5 of the most common CMS website builders so you can know a bit about them:

1. Wordpress

Of course, you’ve probably already heard of this one. Wordpress has over 75 million websites operating worldwide. The platform initially started out as a blogging site before becoming something that could integrate with many different plug-in’s and functions.

The biggest lure for people to use Wordpress is a) that it’s free and customisable and b) lots of famous websites use it, so in today’s market- There are many web-developers who are confident in offering the service. Some of them with prices upwards of a staggering $5000 for a custom Wordpress site.

The reason why this is a shock is because Wordpress is not a custom-coded website platform and going straight ahead with a top-dollar Wordpress site seems a little overboard when there are plenty of other options available- Especially when there so many plug-ins that it’s likely to come with additional risk and update costs over time. We offer custom-coded business packages from $1000 that eliminate the risks associated with Wordpress sites and third-party plug-ins by using custom-code for you.

Wordpress is really popular for blogs and news sites which is why you have probably heard of a few famous brands associated with the site. Managing Wordpress on a large scale is easy for organisations with a large full-time team of people to make updates whenever they are needed. We find that it’s not as good to scale for a small-medium enterprises who are more limited with their resources and prefer to offer custom-code, however, if you’re just starting out? Feel free to reach out. We can explain the difference to you and still accommodate services on the Wordpress interface.

At this moment, we have a really great Wordpress service available that offers template installation and plug-in integration for websites for a low-cost (and it can make your website look ah-mazing.)

2. The pros and cons of Joomla

Joomla is the next most popular CMS platform after Wordpress. Most people have probably heard of the name, but in today's world we’d say that it’s hardly as favoured for novice-users as the Squarespace, Wix or Wordpress platforms.

Joomla has been downloaded more than 50 million times, but over the past year or so- It’ been getting bad reviews for its inability to adapt to new online demands and has quickly becoming outdated.

That said, Joomla still hosts some of the world’s most famous websites- Including IKEA. Again, much like Wordpress, it probably isn’t the best platform to use if you have a limited team of people and resources who take care of your website

needs (otherwise it would likely require a great deal of maintenance.) Now that other CMS platforms with more plug-ins or customisation features are available, people on forums are complaining that there are lots of loopholes in Joomla. If given the option, we prefer to work with Wordpress every time.

3. The pros and cons of Squarespace

Squarespace is a drag and drop template that works in sections. It is very easy to use but can be slow to load and takes quite a-lot of time to create web-pages that function with the appearance that you want. Squarespace is used by a lot of small business and is limited in its functions but still usable. You will find that there isn’t much that can be done beyond what’s already available. Squarespace can create good-looking websites within the constraints of what they do best- Drag and drop features. Uploading images within the back-end and waiting for them to appear in galleries live on the front-end can be very time-consuming.
